Regenerative Business: Principles and Tools for Positive Impact

In the previous article, Niels de Fraguier explored the five core principles of the ‘Compass for Regenerative Business,’ as discussed in his book “The Regenerative Enterprise”. Together, we discovered concrete examples of companies embodying these principles: Purpose, Planet, People, Partners, and Places. These principles form the foundation for building an enterprise. A company based on these principles not only minimizes harm but actively regenerates the well-being of people and the planet. We now continue with Niels’ narrative: how can these principles be translated into practice, and which tools can help us on the journey toward Regenerative Business? To answer these questions, we have gathered our insights and best practices in a book. We have also developed a dynamic tool for continuous assessment and improvement.

Following our work on the Compass for Regenerative Business, many of our closest partners and supporters suggested that we write a book to summarize our insights and gather the best practices from the field. The book is a practical and actionable summary of our work. Hundreds of change-makers, experts, and academics contributed to enrich our thinking and practice.

With the support of numerous opinion leaders such as Otto Scharmer, Satish Kumar, and Jane Goodall, “The Regenerative Enterprise” offers a practical and inspiring path for entrepreneurs seeking to drive transformative change. Through case studies, tools, and frameworks, we share how entrepreneurs build future-ready organizations, responding to social and environmental crises on the path toward Regenerative Business.

The book delves into the five Compass principles in detail, offering concrete tools to develop one’s thinking and anticipate change, fostering innovation, collaboration, and resilience to respond to future shocks. It outlines a clear and actionable path for companies. This path enables them to shift from a sustainable mindset to a regenerative and equitable one, supporting life on Earth and promoting authentic Regenerative Business. The regenerative enterprise

In 2020, we created “The Compass for Regenerative Business”, a comprehensive methodology that allows any organization to self-assess its impact and address critical areas. Based on its five principles (Purpose, Planet, People, Partners, Places), “the Compass” highlights the interconnectedness of business practices, demonstrating that only holistic practices can be truly transformative.

With this in mind, we wanted to fully leverage the potential of the existing methodology. We thus created a dynamic tool capable of highlighting the connections across all aspects of a business.

The Compass mapping offers you the opportunity to:

  • Visualize the connections. Discover how the different aspects of your business are interconnected and how you can adapt to a constantly changing world.
  • Identify critical points. Easily pinpoint the areas that need attention and understand their broader implications within your organization.
  • Develop holistic strategies. Create comprehensive plans that address multiple aspects of your business simultaneously, leading to more effective and impactful solutions.
  • Innovation. Identify the main areas for internal improvement and implement new strategies with your teams.
  • Track progress. Monitor your organization’s journey toward regenerative practices and measure the impact of your initiatives over time.

Embracing regenerative business

Today’s global situation shows it with crystal clarity. We have no other choice. We must adopt new ways of working together to face today’s complex challenges. The transformations we are experiencing offer us the unique opportunity to embrace a better collective version of ourselves. As we engage with this historic moment, the future calls us to radically transform business philosophy, making it purposeful, conscious, and in service of future generations.

This adventure begins within our organizations, leading by example, creating new model and collaborating radically to change the rules for the better. It is our chance to reinvent outdated notions of success and performance and finally embrace a business model that works in harmony with life.

By using systems thinking, we can bring to life a completely new perspective. This perspective concerns the role of businesses in driving transformative change in service of life. Tools such as “The Compass for Regenerative Business” guide us on our transformation journeys to ensure that we can be accountable for the change we create, take the right path, and ask the right questions.

The time has come to write a new story. A story that our children will call success when they inherit a world that offers them dignity, equity, and thriving ecosystems. It begins with us.
